spreads & ads for my high school yearbook

I was on this staff for 4 years—first as a writer, then a section editor, then as a co-Editor-in-Chief.

These are all from my senior year of high school, when I was overseeing a staff of 52, pitching ideas, copywriting/editing, layout designing/editing, attending photoshoots, advertising, selling books, etc.

What I remember most about this promotional material is that the original headline was ‘BUY A YEARBOOK.’ As far as I know, our staff had used the same phrase for several years. I rewrote it to be ‘ORDER YOUR YEARBOOK’ and added pictures and persuasive copy to really slather on the persuasion.

Admittedly, our 504-page yearbook was expensive. Very expensive. The #1 reason that people didn’t buy a yearbook was because of the price tag. I removed the word ‘buy’ altogether to make the prospect feel less daunting, and I added pictures and copy to highlight that while the book might be expensive, the memories might just be worth it. I also wanted to use the phrase ‘your yearbook,' which hints that you’re not buying some random book. Everyone already has a book—and yours is sitting out there, waiting to be ordered.
